MAKERERE UNIVERSITY UNDERTAKES TRANSFORMATIONAL PROJECT:

Transforming Weather Water data into value-added Information services for sustainable Growth in Africa (TWIGA)

Makerere University through the Department of Zoology, Entomology, and Fisheries Sciences (ZEFS), College of Natural Sciences, is part of a  consortium of 16 implementing institutions from Africa and Europe comprising seven research organisations, nine Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs), government organisations, and Academia. In addition the project uses a network of 500 ground weather stations in Africa, providing ready-to-use technical infrastructure.

At Makerere University the project is based in the college of Natural Sciences, Department of Zoology, Entomology and Fisheries Sciences (ZEFS). Implementing personnel outside ZEFS are from the Department of Physics, the College of Health Sciences, and a Non-governmental Organization.

The project aims to provide currently unavailable geo-information on weather, water and climate for sub-Saharan Africa by enhancing satellite-based geo-data with innovative in situ sensors and developing related information services that answer needs of African stakeholders and the GEOSS community. The project will not only avail research-based information on weather, water and climate to stakeholders across selected sectors, including Agriculture, Energy, Water, Insurance, and  Disaster  response & management, hence contributing to the fulfilment of Uganda’s vision of becoming a middle-income country, but also will provide opportunity for research, capacity building, as well as “North-South” and South-South” collaboration.
